Vial Bench

Ten small calculators for prepared vials and the barrels they are drawn into, each doing one job.

Vial strengths

Eight vial masses, each with its own page. Pick the mass printed on the vial in front of you and every figure that follows from it is already worked out.

Educational arithmetic only. Not medical advice and not a dosing protocol.

  • 1 mg vial

At most 0.500 mg/mL in 2 mL of diluent, which is 50.0 mcg in a tenth of a millilitre.

  • 2 mg vial

At most 1.000 mg/mL in 2 mL of diluent, which is 100.0 mcg in a tenth of a millilitre.

  • 2.5 mg vial

At most 1.250 mg/mL in 2 mL of diluent, which is 125.0 mcg in a tenth of a millilitre.

  • 5 mg vial

At most 2.500 mg/mL in 2 mL of diluent, which is 250.0 mcg in a tenth of a millilitre.

  • 10 mg vial

At most 5.000 mg/mL in 2 mL of diluent, which is 500.0 mcg in a tenth of a millilitre.

  • 15 mg vial

At most 7.500 mg/mL in 2 mL of diluent, which is 750.0 mcg in a tenth of a millilitre.

  • 20 mg vial

At most 10.000 mg/mL in 2 mL of diluent, which is 1000.0 mcg in a tenth of a millilitre.

  • 30 mg vial

At most 15.000 mg/mL in 2 mL of diluent, which is 1500.0 mcg in a tenth of a millilitre.

Every vial against every diluent volume, in mg per mL. The whole of the first table on each page, in one place, for when you want to compare across vials rather than within one. Each figure is an upper bound.

Why the vial is the second reference family here

The barrel pages cover a device that cannot be inspected by software. These cover the other half of the bench: the quantity printed on a label, which is the figure every calculation starts from and the one nobody can verify either. A vial marked 5 mg contains what the manufacturer says it contains, and no arithmetic downstream can check that.

What these pages can do is remove the arithmetic as a source of error, so that the remaining uncertainty is honestly about the vial rather than about the maths. Every figure here was produced by the same code that answers the tools, so there is one place for an arithmetic error to be rather than two.

The one thing these pages will not tell you

Which row to use. The amount per draw in the second table on each page is a column heading, not a suggestion: seven figures chosen to span the range a vial of that size makes arithmetic sense at. Nothing here states, implies or recommends an amount for anyone, and the limits of this bench say so at full length.
